University of Fort Hare Investigated Over Qualifications

The University of Forth Hare  (UFH) has caught the attention of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) for all the wrong reasons, as the SIU has recently announced that they will be investigating allegations.

The University of Fort Hare (UFH) has come under scrutiny over how it has awarded some of its qualifications. The universe is being investigated by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) for awarding of honors degrees, corruption allegations as well as claims of maladministration.

SIU Spokesperson, Kaizer Kganyago further stated that they will first look into reports of these allegations that surfaced this past year, where it was indicated that some individuals, particularly government officials, were entered and accepted into Honours and even Masters’s programs at the university without possessing junior degrees.

We are looking at maladministration that might have happened and mismanagement of honours degrees that were given.

When President Cyril Ramaphosa signed two new proclamations allowing the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to look into claims of corruption and poor management in the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure and the university’s operations, the SIU investigation was formally launched.

The SIU also has the authority to seek restitution for any financial losses the State has suffered due to corruption and negligence.

SIU will also investigate the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure’s unauthorized, irregular, or wasteful spending. Five contracts will be the focus of the investigation. These contracts include a contract for an official residence, repairs to the residences of sessional officials, and complete reconstruction of the 6th floor of Parliament.

To address any wrongdoing uncovered during both investigations brought on by acts of corruption, fraud, or poor administration. The SIU is authorized, in both instances, to file a civil lawsuit in the High Court or a Special Tribunal in its name.
