Top Achieving School Strives To Maintain High Pass Rate

Matric learners have had to come face to face with the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic over the past two years. Despite the pandemic’s impact, an Umlazi-based school has continued to produce exceptional matric results and aims to do even more.

During the release of the matric results for the class of 2021, the province’s Premier, Sihle Zikalala revealed that the 2021 pass rate reflects a 0.8% drop from the 2020 results.

This was a common trend across most Districts in the province, including Umlazi District. In this very same district, the Menzi High School maintained its ten-year 100% pass rate and was on the list of top 20 schools in KwaZulu-Natal that did exceptionally well in 2020.

The school’s matric class of 2021 is said to have achieved a 100% pass rate with 89% being Bachelor passes.

Former learner and top achiever, Mhlengi Shange attributed his success to endless motivation from teachers at the school and support from his parents.

During an interview, the school’s Principal, Muntu Ntombela said:

We believe in team teaching, helping each other as teachers and time management.

It is said that former learners of the school are assisting the current cohort of students in preparation for their 2023 matric examination.

The strategy that was being implemented at the school was that of peer tutors reinforcing lessons that the school teachers had previously taught.

According to the Muntu, this strategy worked because it is easy for the learners to grasp what they are being taught by their peers.

It has been reported that all of the members of the Senior Management Team teach Mathematics, Accounting, and IsiZulu to matriculants.
