The Education Department’s deadline for the submission of remarks from people and groups about the suggested changes to school regulations recently passed. The department has acknowledged its satisfaction with the submissions.
Angie Motshekga, Minister of the Department of Basic Education (DBE), published suggested revisions for public consultation in June 2023. In order to provide the public with additional time to submit inputs, the submission date was subsequently extended to July 31, 2023.
The submission of written comments forms part of the review process of the Regulations Relating to the Minimum Norms and Standards for the provision of public school infrastructure.
The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has expressed its appreciation to all the organizations and individuals who made submissions.
In a statement, the education department said:
Now that the public participation window has closed, the department will consolidate the amendments incorporating the comments received.
It has been confirmed that this process will be concluded on 9 September 2023. This will be followed by the DBE embarking on a round of consultations with stakeholders before taking the process to the next level of reporting in the sector between 19 September and 20 October 2023.
Lobby groups have slammed the Education Department for an alleged lack of consultation over the proposal.
Equal Education also disapproved of the removal of deadlines and timelines, for the department to repair and build school infrastructure.
Teacher and activist, Hendrick Makaneta said the removal of deadlines takes away accountability, as teachers are given deadlines for curriculum targets but the department doesn’t want the same for itself.
The Education Department has appealed to all stakeholders to allow the process to unfold as planned in order to conclude all the matters without further delay.
