How The Education Department Evaluates Gauteng School Applications

Parents and guardians are advised to remember the placement criteria when applying to schools. Here is how the Gauteng Education Department evaluates school applications.

The Gauteng Education Department has stated that when applying for Grade 1 and Grade 8 for placement in 2023, it is important for parents and guardians to be aware of how learner placement is prioritized. Learner placement is prioritized in the following order:

  1. Applicants with home addresses in the feeder zone and closest to the school. Parents are advised to apply to schools with feeder zones that cover the applicant’s home address (Home address application option)
  2. Applicants with a sibling or siblings at the school (Sibling application option).
  3. Applicants with parents who work within the school feeder zone (Work address application option).
  4. Applicants with home addresses within 30km of the school feeder zone.
  5. Applicants with home addresses beyond 30km of the school feeder zone.

Parents are reminded that incomplete applications will not receive offers of placement during the placement period. Therefore, it is important that applications are completed by 19 August 2023.

On the application form, the language of teaching, home language and additional language of each school will be indicated to ensure that parents make an informed decision when completing the application.
