How Can I Know If My SRD Grant Appeal Was Approved?

Social Relief of Distress grant applicants who have already submitted their application appeals might be wondering how they will receive feedback from Sassa. Here is how the process is carried out

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) is currently in process of paying out the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant to qualifying applicants for the current month. However, the agency has also introduced a new appeals process through which applicants can ensure that they have access to the grant.

The new R350 grant appeals are administered by the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance (ITSAA) and are intended exclusively for SRD grant beneficiaries.

In terms of how long you have to wait before you receive feedback regarding the outcome of your appeal application, Sassa has stated that the Independent Tribunal will inform you of the outcome of your appeal electronically, within a period of 60 – 90 days from lodging of the appeal.

R350 grant applicants can submit their application appeals by following the steps listed below:

How To Submit R350 Grant Appeal Under New Rules:

  1. Visit srd.dsd.gov.za
  2. Click on the green bar that says ‘click here to lodge an appeal or check appeal status’
  3. Enter your ID number
  4. Enter your cell phone number
  5. Click ‘send pin’ and wait for the SMS which will contain the verification pin
  6. Enter the pin and click ‘submit’
  7. Select the month you are submitting an appeal for
  8. Select the drop-down arrow and choose the reason for your appeal
  9. Click ‘submit’

This, according to Sassa, applies to all appeals from April 2023 and onwards. Even if the applicant has submitted an appeal prior to this period on the old SRD website, Sassa requires applicants to appeal again on the new website.

The ITSAA merged its procedures with those of Sassa, which then resulted in a minimal appeals process because the tribunal already has data from Sassa. This means the tribunal will be handling these appeals and Sassa has confirmed that it will be assessing all the other appeals for months before April 2023, with hopes to finalize all appeals by August 2023.
