Department of Sports, Arts & Culture Bursary Application Details 2023/2024

Department of Sports, Arts & Culture is offering post-graduate bursaries, which include Masters by dissertation & Doctoral study and experimental research, Masters by coursework, and Honours bursary. These bursaries will be awarded to South African and non-South African citizens.

The bursary for Master by dissertation & Doctoral study and experimental research covers the entire tuition fees for a maximum of 3 years on the application received for each year. The stipulated budget for research funds totals R55 000.

The bursary for Masters by coursework covers tuition fees for a maximum of 2 years. The stipulated budget for research funds is any amount not exceeding R25 000 while the student is registered for the dissertation module.

The bursary for Doctoral research covers tuition fees for a maximum of 4 years on the application received for each year. The stipulated budget for research funds totals to R80 000, which is the maximum amount that can be awarded for research activities for a duration of study per qualification.

Upon receipt of an application each year, the scholarship for doctoral study via experimental research will pay tuition costs for a maximum of 4 years. The maximum amount that can be allocated for research grants per qualification is R120,000 (including all years of research expenditure).

If the projected budget would exceed the annual limit, an application for funding and a proposed budget would need to be made every year. If the beneficiary continues to make significant academic progress, the bursary will continue to be awarded as long as the supervisor issues a favorable report. Existing bursary holders will be given preference, especially those who are nearly finished.

The student will receive a bursary contract and a reimbursement form after their bursary application is approved. To request research funding from the Division of Student Funding, utilize the return form. Without submitting a fully completed refund request, no money will be refunded. Additionally, the study funds must never be used for other costs that they weren’t intended for, such as lodging or meals.

If a student wants to continue receiving financial aid, they must submit an application and a thorough budget each year, as well as claim any remaining credit balances and research money.

  • Obtained approval by the Masters and Doctoral Research Bursary Committee (MDRBC) based on academic progress, the standard of work submitted, prioritization of research fields, innovative specializations, and appropriate methodology.

In order to qualify for the bursary for Masters by coursework, an applicant must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria:

  • Registered for a coursework Masters qualification (permanent staff members of the Department of Sports, Arts & Culture and students who are registered for a second/third Masters degree or have already completed a Doctorate do not qualify for this bursary program)
  • Passed two modules of the coursework Masters
  • Obtained a positive supervisor’s report recommending financial support on grounds of academic performance in the coursework modules already completed
  • Obtained approval by the Masters and Doctoral Research Bursary Committee (MDRBC) based on coursework modules already completed and the supervisor’s report

Department of Sports, Arts & Culture will be awarding these bursaries to South African and non-South African citizens, but preference will be given to South African students.

The Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture invites students to apply for the 2023 Bursaries Programme.

Fields of study:

Bursaries will be awarded for Undergraduate and Postgraduate studies within heritage-related programs, specifically in these fields:

  • Anthropology (focused on forensic/medical anthropology)
  • Archaeology (focused on marine and underwater cultural heritage, and forensics)
  • Archives and Records Management
  • Conservation of the Built Environment (including preventive conservation)
  • Collections (Cultural & Natural) Management (Not Nature Conservation)
  • Digital heritage
  • IKS or Courses that contribute to the preservation and promotion of Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) and S.A. Living Heritage
  • Marketing of heritage
  • Museum Studies or Management and Curatorship
  • Paleontology

Requirements:

  • You must be a South African citizen
  • You must be 40 years old or younger
  • You must be studying or intend on studying towards an Undergraduate or Postgraduate qualification, in one of the heritage-related programs listed above
  • You must be studying or have been accepted to study at an institution that is accredited and registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training
  • You must have a strong academic record
  • You must NOT be receiving any other bursary funding
  • You must NOT be currently full-time employed within the private sector, government, or state agencies
  • You must NOT earn more than R130 000 per annum

The bursary will be awarded to the maximum value of R110 000 per student and will be paid directly to the higher institution of learning.

The bursary will provide cover for the following expenses:

  • Full cover for tuition fees
  • Full cover for books
  • Laptop, to the maximum value of R10 000 (students must provide 3 receipts/ invoices)
  • Accommodation, to the maximum value of R50 000 (where applicable)
  • Meals, to the maximum value of R18 500 maximum amount (where applicable)
