Learnerships are typically designed for unemployed or employed individuals who are looking to improve their skills and gain qualifications in a specific trade or profession. The program is offered in various industries, including agriculture, construction, hospitality, manufacturing, and mining.

Learnerships are governed by the Skills Development Act and the Skills Development Levies Act and are implemented by the Department of Higher Education and Training, SETAs (Sector Education and Training Authorities), and accredited training providers. Upon completion of a learnership, learners receive a nationally recognized qualification that can help them to secure employment or advance their careers.

How Do Learnerships Work?

Learnerships are a type of vocational training program that combines theoretical learning with practical work experience. They are typically offered by companies in partnership with accredited training providers and are designed to help learners acquire the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in a specific industry or occupation.

Here’s how learnerships typically work:

1. Identification of a need: A company identifies a need for specific skills or knowledge within its workforce.

2. Partnership with a training provider: The company partners with an accredited training provider to develop a learnership program that meets the identified needs.

3. Recruitment of learners: The company recruits learners who meet the requirements for the learnership program, such as having a certain level of education or work experience.

4. Training: The learners participate in a structured training program that includes both theoretical and practical components. The training is typically delivered through classroom instruction, on-the-job training, and online learning.

5. Workplace experience: The learners work in the company alongside experienced employees to gain practical work experience and apply the knowledge gained during their training.

6. Assessment: The learners are assessed throughout the learnership program to determine whether they have acquired the necessary skills and knowledge to meet the requirements of the qualification.

7. Certification: Upon successful completion of the learnership program and assessment, learners receive a nationally recognized qualification.

Learnerships offer a valuable opportunity for individuals to gain practical work experience and develop skills that are in demand by employers. They also benefit companies by providing them with a skilled workforce that can help them meet their business needs.
